Cabins go Green

Eco Cabins

KMI sites at Blackburn and Penrith are the first to take delivery of the brand new energy efficient 'Energy-Wise+' cabins supplied by Interserve Site Services.

These new cabins achieve a B rating when assessed against The Building Research Establishment’s Simplified Building Energy Model or SBEM.  This is equivalent to them using approximately 70% less electricity for heating and lighting than standard site cabins, which are typically 'E' Rated.

This improved energy efficiency is achieved by the office and welfare cabins having highly insulated walls, floors and roofs, sealed-unit double glazing, electric heaters with timers and thermostats, PIR-controlled low-energy lighting and external door closers which all add to the efficiencies.  The toilet facilities also have water saving taps and waterless urinals to reduce water use.

Other improvements include higher security doors and window shutters (both with multi-point locks), blue plug and socket power connections and lifting points at ground level to overcome previous issues of working at height. Shorter, watertightcabin links will reduce the overall footprint required to site the cabins.

Those who have seen the cabins so far are impressed by the improved working environment which these new cabins provide.

Electricity and water use on construction sites is a significant cost both financially and environmentally. An electricity meter has been fitted to the site cabin supply at Penrith to benchmark consumption. We will therefore soon know the overall effect of the energy-saving features.

Interserve Site Services can provide a full cabin installation service including lift plan, method statements, risk assessments, electrical installation and testing, plumbing, alarm systems and exterior lighting. The Interserve Site Services Team has installed site accommodation as far afield as the Falkland Islands and Antarctica!
